Jose Acosta, CRT – Respiratory Therapist

Respiratory Therapy Tips
Jose Acosta, respiratory therapist

Jose Acosta, CRT, was always interested in health and science. When he saw his father in intensive care after heart surgery, Acosta realized he wanted to join the medical profession. He received an Associate Degree of Science in Biology at Essex County College in Newark, NJ. Then he completed his Certified Respiratory Therapist certificate from the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 2002.

Emergency Room to Home Care

Acosta worked at Christ Hospital in Jersey City, NJ, from 2003 to 2005. There, he worked in the emergency room and intensive care unit administering pulmonary function tests. During this time, he decided he wanted to do more than patch people up. He wanted to impact their long-term health care. He transitioned to sleep medicine and respiratory home care in 2005. His new role included visiting patients’ homes to coordinate his clinical assessment with their individual lifestyle. The goal was to help create a healthier life.

From 2005 through 2018, Acosta worked at various Durable Medical Equipment (DME) providers including Reliable Medical and Sleep Circle/Lincare. He managed a staff of clinicians and service technicians and provided staff training on positive airway pressure, oxygen, and non-invasive ventilation.

The Personal Touch

With both institutional and home-based care experience, Acosta can balance physician goals and patient needs. This experience was essential as the resident respiratory therapist at Agile Medical, including The CPAP Shop and The Oxygen Concentrator Supplies Shop.

“I have a stepdaughter who also has health issues. I always treat my patients as I would want her to be treated,” said Acosta. He believes in giving patients a fair assessment of all their options and matching the right product to the right person. Acosta used this personal approach to patient care, as well as his 15+ years of respiratory therapy experience, to train our staff and better meet our customers’ needs.
