How do I clean and disinfect my nebulizer mouthpiece and tubing?
Nebulizer equipment such as the tubing and medicine cup should be cleaned after each use and sanitized at least weekly.
After Each Treatment -
Disconnect the medicine cup from the tubing and unscrew the top of the medicine cup. Rinse the medicine cup and mouthpiece under a strong stream of warm water. You can also fill the medicine cup with a bit of clean water and run the nebulizer for a few seconds to ensure any trapped medication is cleared. Shake off any excess water when done and allow the parts to air dry thoroughly.
After your last treatment of the day -
Disconnect the nebulizer cup and mouthpiece from the tubing. Wash the cup and mouthpiece with warm soapy water or allow to soak for a few minutes. Rinse all of the parts with warm water, shake of excess and allow to air dry. Do not towel try.
Every few days or at least once a week -
Use a solution of 1 part distilled white vinegar to about 3 parts water, mix in a clean bowl. Disconnect your nebulizer cup and mask from the tubing and allow them to soak for 10-20 minutes. After 10-20 minutes, rinse under a stream of warm tap water. Shake off excess liquid and allow to air dry thoroughly.
Alternatively, the medicine cup and mouthpiece can be boiled with 2-3 drops of dishwashing liquid for about 10 minutes, then rinsed and left to air dry.
