What are the parts to a jet nebulizer?

There are several components to a jet nebulizer.

  1. The compressor is the motor which produces the needed airflow. Most people refer to it as the neb machine.
  2. The tubing connects the compressor to the nebulizer cup. The tubing is typically universal and is interchangeable with machines and nebulizer cups of different brands.
  3. The medicine is placed in nebulizer cup. These cups usually hold enough for 8ml to 10ml of liquid medication. That's usually enough for your daily nebulized medication regimen. There is a screw top so the medication doesn't spill out. The bottom portion has an adaptor where the tubing gets connected to.
  4. Baffle or an insert piece is found inside the nebulizer cup. This is what allows the air flow from the compressor to nebulize (turn into mist) the liquid medication. Do not lose this down piece down the drain when cleaning.
  5. A mouthpiece is an option from which you will inhale the nebulized medication. Patients must remember to inhale through the mouth
  6. An aerosol mask is another option from which you can inhale your nebulized medication. Do not use if you are claustrophobic. When using the aerosol mask, it’s appropriate to inhale through both your nose and mouth. An elastic band goes around the head to keep the mask in place while your hands remain free.
